前人种树， 后人乘凉。 The young reaps the benefit of the shade of the trees planted by their forefathers. A tree is a plant, a symbol and a source of energy. Rooted at one spot, the only way to go is up. Quietly, it towers over us, providing shade and shelter against the unforgiving elements of nature. Never does it utter a word of discontent, humbly accepting what is given to it. Often taken for granted, it never despairs and worked against the odds. Slowly and deeply its roots grow, into the hearts that it vowed to shade and protect, hoping that one day they will learn the act of sacrifice. And when that time comes, the magnificent tree will bow one last time, giving way to the young ones that will take its place. Its demise will not be in vain, for it had nourished the lives and souls of many. “Peace”, is a body of work that draws its context from the Chinese sayings and literature that often uses trees as symbols or metaphors that depicts the father figure. Taking photographs of trees that are random and unattractive, reflecting and transforming them into beautiful images that is both chaotic yet structured, this body of work reflects my struggle to keep up to my own interpretation of my father’s expectations(of me). Through this body of work, I hope to bring across to the viewers the feelings of my struggle through the chaos around the edges of the images, and the feelings of peace when the eyes move towards the more structured centre of the images.
