In Singapore, the genre of cyclists vary from young to old, locals and foreigners alike, for a variety of reasons and differing cycling conditions. Cyclists on roads often face countless looming dangers that constantly place their lives at risk due to a number of factors. Despite the introduction of better road safety campaigns, regulations and awareness, the number of fatalities and casualties of such vulnerable road users are on a steady rise. In Singapore, vulnerable road users(pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists) form a significant 66% of traffic casualties and 80% of traffic fatalities and an average of 17 cyclists have lost their lives every year since 1998. In 2008, 585 cyclists were injured in road related accidents, the highest since 1996. Regardless of fault, the focus is directed towards improving the overall road conditions for cyclists and the preservation of their lives. The process of the final year project investigates and applies research findings and concepts that would enable cyclists to engage cycling in a well-protected and safe environment. As a project concluding objective, it is directed at alleviating safety concerns and elevates the overall confidence of current road conditions, encouraging cycling as a preferred mode of transportation for everyone.
