Most social networks now do interact with one another; however this interaction is not enough. Ifttt.com has come up with a brilliant idea to link the functions of different social networks together. Through the research done about Ifttt, we wanted to create a web service customized and personalized for NTU students which is similar to that. From the case studies brainstormed, we have worked on two functions for a start. The functions are the tracking of module codes textbooks from the Students’ Union forum and the receiving of latest updates from the Nanyang Chronicle Facebook page. Hence, this report will show how we attempt to create the system to automate school web taks for the students. In summary, we have analyzed about the requirements of the system and came up with the specifications. Followed by, the designing and implementation of the system. JavaSever pages (JSP) were used for the web pages and Java Servlet for the coding. MySQL and Apache Tomcat servers are used to assist in the creation of the system. The web system has met all functional requirements and working as expected. Students are able to receive emails when their tasks are triggered. The system is automated as tasks are scheduled to run hourly on the Windows task scheduler. However, we have some resource limitations and could only send email as the ‘action’ of the tasks. Through testing, we have realized that the website performs well on Internet Explorer and Google Chrome but not Firefox. This issue has to be solved as Firefox is considered one of the more popular web browsers used. Based on what we have achieved, we can conclude that the Ifttt idea is feasible and it should be further revised to include more functions and actions to improve the web experience of NTU students.
