Summary: | This article describes the validation of the 15-item Child-Parent Relationship Scale: Short Form (CPRS-SF) using an Asian sample of parents and children from a clinical setting (N = 134). The CPRS-SF is a measure assessing parental perceptions of the quality of their parent-child relationships in the domains of Closeness and Conflict. Results from exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution. One problematic item was dropped due to low factor loadings, communalities and item-total correlations. A modified 14-item two-factor solution was proposed. Results from confirmatory factor analysis revealed that both the one-factor solution and the modified one-factor solution had a poor fit to the data, while both the original two-factor solution and the modified two-factor solution had a good fit to the data. Out of the four competing models, the modified two-factor model had the best fit to the data across all fit indices. This study provides preliminary evidence that the CPRS-SF has adequate validity in the Asian context, albeit requiring some modification. Limitations as well as directions for future research are discussed. |
