While conflicts sometimes occur within such relationships, which results in interpersonal stress, perspective taking may be a factor to help manage this stress. However, even though the ability of perspective taking is universal, the usage of this ability differs in individuals holding different self construals. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between interpersonal stress and perspective taking, a cognitive form of empathy, with self construal as a moderator to this relationship. Specifically, it was hypothesized that there would be a positive relationship between interpersonal stress and perspective taking, and this effect is stronger in the interdependent group as compared to the independent group. However, the results did not find any significant results. The implications and importance of examining the construct of perspective taking and interpersonal stress are discussed.
