Summary: | Gender roles have dictated a set of responsibilities that males and females are expected to follow in a society. The division of labour was the primary reason for the establishment of different roles in traditional societies. However, critics have argued against its validity and applicability in this modern society. Gender inequality due to the structure of gender roles is one the main issues highlighted by feminists. Using Tinbergen’s four levels of behavioural explanation, this review attempts to analyse the factors that allow gender roles to exist through these times. This review will also discuss whether it is necessary to promote changes to gender roles and the implications of doing so in light of several suggestions from the existing literature. |
