Summary: | The needs for a structural health monitoring (SHM) system for civil and building structures are emerging (Mita, 1999). Among various types of sensors used to monitor structural health, the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)–based optical sensor has been considered to be one of the most promising sensors (Chong et al., 2001) because of its wavelength-selective nature, it has immunity to electromagnetic interference, high durability and multiplexing capability. The advantages that FBG sensors have over the conventional strain gauges make long-distance and quasi-distributed sensing possible. |
