Measuring pedestrian safety and accessibility near transit stations using geographic information system (GIS)
In recent years, many high-rise public residential flats are built in the vicinity of the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) in Singapore. The residents are encouraged to use the MRT as their preferred mode of transport with the transit stations located within walking distance from their residence. This bui...

The residents are encouraged to use the MRT as their preferred mode of transport with the transit stations located within walking distance from their residence. This building blueprint has given the residents many advantages both beneficial to the individual as well as the public. The frequent walks to the transit stations provide residents with their daily dose of exercise required to improve their health; at the same time, reducing emission of pollutants into the environment and reducing traffic congestion on the roads from fewer vehicles. To encourage walking, it is important to ensure that the transit stations are easily accessible to the pedestrians and making it safe for them to move around in order to increase the usage of transit system. Therefore, the safety and accessibility index (SAI) is established in the study.
