The heavy precipitations often pose a problem to the soil especially steep slopes. Hence, solutions need to be found to mitigate these slope stability problems, and one of the cheapest means is to implement a layer of vegetation on the slope surface. Different types of vegetation have different impacts on the shear strength of soil. The focus of this project is to carry out different types of laboratory tests to investigate the effect of shrubs (Orange Jasmine) on the shear strength of residual soils. Multistage consolidation undrained (CU) saturated triaxial tests, multistage consolidation drained (CD) unsaturated triaxial tests, soil-water characteristic curves tests and permeability tests were conducted on soil specimens with different root growth periods. The soil specimens were extracted from the Tampines site where the residual soil is old alluvium.
