Summary:The global world is facing aging population and this ignites the interest for medical advances to keep up with the ageing society. Current technology requires removal of the bio-devices after they have finished serving their function. This step can be eliminated if the implants can disintegrate in the human body after sometime. Mg alloys have been tentatively designed as biodegradable implants for hard tissue repair and for coronary stents. However, the fast degradation rate of Mg alloy in physiological environment has restricted their successful applications. Recently, the developments of Mg-based metallic glass provide a prospect alternative as biodegradable implants instead of crystalline Mg alloys.
