description |
Composites generally possess exceptional mechanical properties, the most outstanding being their high strength-to-weight ratio. They also offer good corrosion resistance and are good alternatives for marine applications.
There is growing recognition that using composites would reduce life cycle costs but
their application is limited due to the lack of design codes, standards and material
databases.
In this project, mechanical properties of a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)
composite material were determined and the effects of strain rate as well as
temperature on these properties were studied. Composites made from Toray and
Hextow carbon fibers, with a common Derakane vinyl ester (VE) resin were chosen
for the study. |
