Summary: | This project involves the use of a piezoelectric actuator and a cutting insert to generate features on the aluminium rod. The aluminium rod is mounted onto the spindle of a CNC milling machine and the actuator assembly (actuator and cutting insert) is used to cut the rod into several layers by varying the voltage supplied to the piezoelectric actuator. The relationship between the voltage supplied and the depth of cut into the work piece is then being investigated. The motivation behind this project is to show that the actuator assembly is able to perform cut on the work piece and the cut is of comparable magnitude to that performed by the CNC milling machine. This will then allow further research into rotating the actuator assembly to generate features on a work piece, at the same time removing the problem of backlashes since no motion is needed in the X and Y axes. |
