Numerical parameter study on lubricant evolution in heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) system

This report contains numerical simulation, adopting the finite volume method, to investigate the heat transfer and the depletion of lubricant in the heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) system. The setup of the system is in such a way that a laser beam mechanism is mounted on a flying slider head...

The setup of the system is in such a way that a laser beam mechanism is mounted on a flying slider head which is positioned above the surface of a rotating disk. The disk is coated with a thin film of lubricant material. The laser beam will shoot down a laser pulse onto the surface of the disk causing heat to be generated on the lubricant film, leading to the lubricant mass loss. The factors that contributed to lubricant depletion are categorized into three main categories, namely, evaporation enthalpy, initial lubricant film thickness and thermocapillary stress. Although thermocapillary stress effect contributes to the depletion of lubricant, it is not a considering factor in this report.
