Design of the analog-to-digital converter using threshold inverter quantization approach

This project is to design Flash Analog-to-digital Converter (ADC) using Threshold Inverter Quantization (TIQ) method. The TIQ-based Flash ADC must be designed to satisfy the issues of low-power and low-voltage implementations. TIQ is a creative method that is introduced by Ali Tangel. It makes use o...

The TIQ-based Flash ADC must be designed to satisfy the issues of low-power and low-voltage implementations. TIQ is a creative method that is introduced by Ali Tangel. It makes use of 2-cascaded inverters to replace the conventional comparator. The TIQ comparator uses it inverter’s threshold voltage as the internal voltage reference. However, the threshold voltage of inverter depends on the process and temperature. Thus, in order to stabilize this threshold voltage value and achieve the right conversion performance, a circuit called “Self-tuned Inverter”, which is proposed by M. T. Tan and J. S. Chang, is used. This special inverter helps to improve the performance of the Flash ADC and overcome the problem of sensitivity. Simulation results of the 2 TIQ Flash ADCs will be discuss in this report. It is a proof that the TIQ method helps the Flash ADC achieves low-power dissipation, low-voltage operation as well as high-speed conversion.
