In order to improve the efficiency, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology can be used for multicast applications with large transmitting capacity. This final year project aims to develop a proper traffic grooming methods and gain a better understanding on the working theories of the WDM technology. We launch a new grooming scheme with leakage control. Light trees with acceptable percentage of wastage will be chosen for the grooming. The method of building new light trees will be based on the idea of tree splitting. Computer simulations are used to evaluate the performance of this scheme. Through the analysis, we conclude that introducing leaking into the grooming scheme improves the efficiency of the resource utilization. The relationship between blocking probability and the add-and-drop ratio is also investigated in this report. With a proper add-and-drop ratio, the performance of this scheme can be optimized. We suggest that the programming should be further improved and different network topologies can be used in the future study.
