Summary: | This report presents a design and simulation of DC/DC bi-directional charging controller. This system is used to control the flow of power between bus (DC link) and the battery bank. It is designed to work in three different modes of operation assigned by users.
This project is built from the concept of buck and boost converters. The proposed system can be used in most if not all of the renewable energy systems explored. They include wind generation, hydro energy and solar energy in an exhaustive list that is too much to mention and also not forgetting the charging system used for electric vehicle charging purpose. Solar energy has increasingly grown in their popularity due to their cost and green campaigns favored worldwide. While photovoltaic modules harness the solar power from the sun, the energy harnessed is varying throughout the day and cannot be used up instantly. The energy is either stored in batteries or sell back to the local grid to get back some capital.
This proposed two quadrant system is to allow power to flow to the batteries when the bus (DC link) has sufficient power for the load whilst not overcharging the battery or discharging the battery to allow power to flow to the bus (DC link) to maintain the voltage if there is an increase in load. The system is then implemented in Matlab Simulink and results presented to discuss the validity of the proposed algorithm. |
