Summary: | This project is the study of the structural interaction between an airfoil and its fluid medium. As a moving fluid is passed over the composite wing, it begins to undergo deformation. Such a phenomenon is explained using structural and aerodynamic theories together in FSI analysis.
After the wing is fabricated, it undergoes static and tensile tests in order to appraise its material properties. Following this would be tests in the wind tunnel in order to recreate and observe the deformation of the wing in high-speed fluid flow. Increasing the velocity of the incoming fluid increases the lift produced by the wing, hence leading to a deformation. Finally, FSI analysis is carried out in ANSYS by coupling a structural solver together with a fluid solver.
With extensive testing and computer analysis, efforts are made to reconcile the experimental data together with the computer results. Attention is given to values such as the deflection, lift and drag at different angles of attack and fluid velocities while still relating to structural and aerodynamic theories.
The report ends with a summary of its findings as well as a recommendation of the future improvements that can be made to improve current results. |
