Summary:Recently, the emergence of growing demand for wireless applications and services has resulted in over-congested licensed bands, calling for more flexible strategies to allow higher spectrum utilization efficiency. To this end, cognitive radio (CR) is considered to be a novel and promising technology with its capability to adjust its system operating parameters in response to the surrounding wireless environment. Spectrum sensing, which is the key enabling feature in CR technique, fully exploits the under-utilized licensed spectrum bands by constantly searching for unoccupied frequency bands and frequently sensing, analyzing and identifying the presence of primary users. To avoid interference to licensed users, the CR network should vacate the band whenever the primary user becomes active.
