Summary: | This case study of the National Museum of Singapore looks at information presented at the museum and relates it to national identity formation and construction. It tracks the changing presentation of Singapore and Singapore‘s history in the Singapore History Museum (SHM) and the National Museum of Singapore (NMS) from 1993 to 2006. It also aims to convey the role of SHM and NMS in the construction of a Singaporean identity. Major themes in museum studies literature, such as communication theories and presenting national identity in the museum, will be reviewed and discussed in relation to the current study. Materials related to the NMS such as guidebooks and museum publications are examined for data on exhibitions held throughout the years and on the galleries in the NMS. Extended literature review of scholarship on Singapore‘s national identity and historiography will be carried out to explore their relationship with museum representation. |
