Description
Summary:Recent years has shown vast progress in the development of mobile communication devices, resulting in a particular, continuous reduction in handset size. In order to facilitate this, there is a need for a similar development of small and low profile antennas. The challenge therefore, is to maintain the low profile characteristics while concurrently improving the bandwidth of the antenna. There are many kinds of antennas; however the student will be focusing on long slot antennas in particular for this research. It is known that long slot antenna can theoretically provide an infinite bandwidth. Although an infinite bandwidth may never be realized in practice, a long slot antenna can potentially achieve a very wide bandwidth when properly fed. The student will learn to design long slot antennas using computer software known as High Frequency Structures Simulator (HFSS) and design an improved version of the antenna by changing the slot length, which maintains the low profile and gives more bandwidth. The simulation results of the improved slot antenna show that by altering the length of the slot, there is a significant improvement in the bandwidth obtained.
