Description
Summary:Radiation has drawn public’s attention after incident at Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. Public concerns about increased radiation in their daily life. Although Singapore is 5700 km far away from Fukushima, people in Singapore also concern about the nuclear radiation leakage into air, water and increased in natural background radiation as well. In this report, natural background radiation, different types of adiation, sources of radiation and biological effects of radiation will be discussed for a better understanding. Natural background radiation measurement of radionuclides in soil and natural background radiation in other countries such as US, Japan, China and Turkey will also be discussed. Survey measurement of natural background radiation throughout Singapore Island was performed using a Geiger Muller counter. Lastly, comparing radiation level of Singapore to other countries’ will make sure that Singapore has a comparably low radiation level to other countries in the world and safe environment for people to live in.
