Description
Summary:The desire for higher energy supply security and reduced environmental degradation are the two major impetuses for the continuous search for renewable power generation. Wind power generation is shown to be attractive, among the many alternatives to fossil fuels, and the technology has enjoyed wide-spread acceptance in many parts of the world in recent times. Cost of wind turbine generator (WTG) is decreasing and major negative environmental impact of wind power generation has essentially been overcome. As is well-known, the amount of wind power generated by a WTG depends very much on the climatic conditions on site. As a result, one main impediment to the large-scale exploitation of wind energy potential is due to the unsteadiness in its electrical power production. This variability brings with it challenges when one attempts to integrate large-scale wind power scheme into electricity grids. Various design techniques have been proposed, with the view to increase the proportion of wind energy contribution into the grids. Among these system designs, application of energy storage system (ESS) has been identified as one approach with great promise. Generally, an ESS is used in three fields of application in electrical utilities: for power leveling, bridging power and power quality enhancement. The approach to the design and adoption of particular ESS type depends very much on the purpose of the application.
