Nanyang Business School John Vong DRNTU::Business The objective of this report is to evaluate the present situation and forecast the future potential of the United Malayan Banking Corporation (UMBC). The bank is chosen because it had attained aggressive growth for the past few years and we would like to examine the factors behind its performance. In addition, we will also look at the external factors that may affect its future growth. The methods of evaluation used are based on the fundamental top-down approach and the SWOT (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis. The result of our study is that the bank still has a long way to go before it can match the Tier-1 banks in terms of cost efficiency and market share. The bank should also watch its capital adequacy and liquidity ratios as these areas may threaten the bank’s performance in the long run. However, we feel that it still has the capability to register long term earnings and asset growth if it is willing to invest in information technology and staff training.
