Description
Summary:The aim of this Applied Research Project is to study the use of accounting software in Singapore. This project was motivated by the recently generated interest in the use of such software by companies in our information-based society. We have studied the features and level of user satisfaction provided by software in general and the individual programmes used by certain companies in particular. We conducted our research by doing a literature review on the topic, developing a questionnaire to collect data, pilot-testing this questionnaire and finally, interviewing 30 accounting professionals. 2. Software Function Required By Users From our findings, all 30 accounting professional named general book- keeping functions (e.g. double-entry system of accounting, generation balance sheets, profit and loss statements, etc.) as essential to any accounting software. About 40% of the respondents required the package to forecast cash flows. Manufacturing firms, which formed 30% of our sample, found monitoring inventory level to be an especially important function. These manufacturing firms also wanted accounting software that maintains a fixed asset schedule. Almost all respondents wanted a software that could age accounts receivable as well as monitor the company's level of accounts payable. Some respondents came up with additional features besides those listed in the questionnaire. They are budgeting and payroll accounting functions.
