Nanyang Business School Kenny Lee DRNTU::Business::Accounting With an estimated 2000 people joining each day, the Internet is the fastest growing network in the world. The impact and usefulness of the Internet parallels the history of personal computing, with a lag of about ten years. About ten years ago, personal computers brought computing from the realm of technical gurus to the general public: “the rest of us,” as Apple said in their advertisements. The Internet is currently making the same transition. It is becoming an essential tool for everyone, even the business community realize its impact on its practices. This report thus begins with the primary objective of assessing the impact of the Internet on the accounting professional’s information requirements together with the methodology and scope defined. Knowledge of the Internet was largely based on information obtained from books, periodicals, and journals. Accounting-related web sites were also extensively researched into and the findings noted. Finally, the report proposes a framework of a network that will serve the local accountants’ information requirements. The Internet contains rich resources of information and opportunities. The benefits reaped therefrom certainly are immeasurable and not to be ignored. It is imperative for the local accountants not to log onto the Internet and tap on its vast sources of information. It is our desire that this report will shed light on this new technology and trigger further research into this area in the near future.
