Summary: | Wet markets (WMs) have undeniably always been a part of Singapore’s heritage, which existed as early as 1950s. They comprise an integral part of the cultural fabric of Singapore and are one of the key features that give the modern city its unique character. However, in recent years, the continuity of WMs has been threatened. Thus, this paper aims to explore key threats faced by WMs, which are changing demographic trends and competition from supermarkets. From there, three related strategies were formulated and the viability of these strategies was studied. Surveys were conducted on both consumers as well as WM stallholders to find out their perceptions towards the viability of these strategies. Our results showed that only one of the three suggested strategies were accepted by both the consumers and WM stallholders. This shows that there may be other underlying factors affecting the rejection of the other two strategies, which will be explained in this study. |
