Description
Chinese Children’s Literature in Malaysia had always been deeply influenced by her political and social conditions. Yet, despite of these, the development of Chinese Children’s Literature in Malaysia had been one of slow progress since it was established in 1924. This trend has been largely put down to the political interventions in the country, as well as the influx of Chinese Literature from overseas, leading to the suppression of local literature. In addition, the lack of the societal role in identifying the importance of teenage literature had led to the teenage literature in the Malaysian book market. Hence, teenagers only have the option of either literature for young children, one that is not compatible for them; or the literature for adults, which might prove beyond their abilities. The situation started to change, however, with Khor Ewe Pin’s emergence in the industry. Khor did not start out specializing in teenage literature. In 2006, he started to realize the deprivation of teenage literature in the local market. He authored and published 13 teenage novels in 7 years and expanded the industry with the establishment of a publishing company and the promotion of teenage literature in schools. His main motivation in doing so was to fill in the void in Malaysian Chinese Literature. His hard work paid out when Seven Days, published in 2006, gained both popularity and critical acclaim and, in turn, changing the Chinese writing and publishing landscape in Malaysia. Today, we see many more new writers working on teenage literature, breathing new life into the landscape of Chinese Children’s Literature in Malaysia. The research undertaken for this paper seeks to explore the literary adaptations of Khor Ewe Pin’s teenage novels published in 2006-2011 as brought about by the social, political and cultural transformation in Malaysia.
