Therefore, despite kiasu-ism being associated with negative connotations, Singaporeans are still reluctant or unable to move away from it. Although many scholars have presented various analyses on the causes and effects of kiasu-ism, there has been a lack of focus on discovering the rationales behind such reluctance or inability. This paper examines this lack of focus through surveys and interviews with local undergraduates on various aspects of the kiasu culture. Based on the results, Singaporeans are seen as ungracious and self-centred due to their individualistic approach. The conclusion can hence be drawn that Singaporeans’ reluctance or inability to overcome kiasu-ism correlates with their level of individualism, which is highly dependent on the lack of community spirit, as well as current policies.
