Description
Summary:This premise of this paper is centred on the idea that muscularity presents a sight/site of conflict for female footballers in the cultural milieu of Singapore. It then seeks to explore how these female footballers have come to reconcile with their muscularity and negotiate their gender identity within the social expectations of (heteronormative) femininity. Using the feminist cultural studies paradigm and gender performativity theories, this paper will construct female footballers and their bodies as a contested ideological terrain and argue that these female footballers paradoxically end up (re)producing the very ideologies that constrained them.
