However, existing literature fails to place adequate emphasis on the young as active producers of social capital. Using social capital, networks and ties as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this study is to explore the significance of social networks and ties in the transition to a local university. We will examine how the undergraduates use their old and new friendships and familial networks as sources of cognitive, emotional and social resources as they transition and integrate to university life. Drawing on qualitative interviews conducted amongst 17 young Singaporean adults between the ages of 19 and 24, this paper provides evidence for the varied ways that young adults develop and utilise their networks and ties as they manage the transition and integration to a university.
