Piano and the spirit of kiasuism.

This study provides sociological insights on the ‘forced ‘piano learning culture apparent in Singapore. In particular, it seeks to examine how the spirit of Kiasuism may be the impetus behind the ‘forced’ piano learning culture in Singapore by exploring the validity of two postulates: 1) Mothers who are Kiasu oriented will force their children to learn piano and 2) Mothers who are not kiasu oriented will not force their children to learn piano. From the results gathered, I would propose that an overall understanding of this situation can be best sought through a combination of Kiasuism and Bourdieu logic on the accumulation of capital. In addition, I would argue for an extended perspective on Kiasu in Denial to further support the validity of the first postulate.
