Findings through means of a case study conducted at a selected HDB hostel in Singapore have revealed that although most of the respondents interviewed were indeed seeking to experience one form or another of authenticity, the backpackers’ identity was found to be one that is fluid and largely constructed by self-definition, with respondents offering varying interpretations of the term ‘backpacker’.
