Haw Par Gardens, also known as the Tiger Balm Gardens or more commonly as Haw Par Villa, is a historical site that is situated at Pasir Panjang Road, along the west coast of Singapore. This used to be the mansion of the late Mr. Aw Boon Par, built for him by his brother Mr. Aw Boon Haw. Attached to it was also a public garden for which people of those days could use as a recreational facility. In 1985, the Gardens were officially acquired by the government and entrusted to the Singapore Tourism Promotion Board. It was also decided that this place was to be developed into a world-class theme park. This project was tendered to International Theme Parks. After investing S$80 million, the theme park was finally opened on 2nd October 1990 and was named Dragon World. Unfortunately, the theme park was a losing venture and it eventually closed after 10 years of operations. Subsequently, the Gardens were returned to its original state. This paper attempts to understand the historical development of the Haw Par Gardens through the organization and analysis of past literature and primary sources. In addition, this paper also explores the cultural meaning of the Gardens through the different eras. Lastly, this paper also attempts to understand the relevance and value of the Gardens to modern day Singapore and offers some insights and suggestions as to the future direction of the Gardens.
