Pathological gambling : gambling as a form of investment?

The increase in prevalence of pathological gambling has been a worldwide phenomenon. With the development of the Integrated Resort (IR) in Singapore as well as the prolific growth of the internet gambling industry, we have witnessed an uptrend in the pathological gambling rates. Social costs suffered by both the family and the society as a consequence of pathological gambling are significant and incur a negative externality on society. This study serves as a resource for understanding people’s view towards gambling and investment with special emphasis placed on the traditional view of gambling as a form of investment. The objective of this study is to derive a relationship between investment and gambling, to check if the traditional view holds true. Topics discussed within the dimensions of this project involve the gambling landscape in Singapore, a comprehensive description of the similarities and differences between gambling and investment and the factors affecting monetary gambling outcomes and hence gambling and investment behaviour.
