The project attempts to test if society expressed through typeface design can reveal aspects of local culture in a closer proximity and context to the field of native Singapore Design. The project’s title follows the popular term “little red dot” that refers to Singapore’s geographical presence on the world map, and was motivated by my training as a visual communicator and my identity as a Singaporean. The average design practise in Singapore does not usually include typeface design in their scope of service, which could be due to the pace of Singapore’s market but also suggest a growing creative community in its infancy. While typefaces have been commissioned by both corporate and public institutions in Singapore, they were usually designed by foreign agencies. This led me to realise the potential of typeface design in Singapore, as it was a niche service that was limited within the local creative market, but also a missing point of view in native Singaporean design.
