Summary: | The ideal inviolability of marriage in the past has unfortunately gradually worn away in many modern societies today. Divorce is very much accepted in the modern world today and this is clearly no exception to Singapore as well. Getting a divorce can be a major life change and it is often stressful and complicated. Typically, divorcing spouses go through a period of high conflict and intense pain during the process. The pain continues for years after divorce, but healing is usually more or less completed within a few years after divorce. This is not true for children and the effect of divorce can continue to torment the children for decades.
In divorce, children are often hurt. It causes them great anger, pain, confusion, anxiety and behaviour problems especially in the first couple of years of breakup. And for some children it leads to long-term insecurity, fear and anxiety of having close relationships with other people. Children are always the victims in divorce and their voices have rarely been heard as the parents are usually busy with their own issues and neglect the voices who have the least control of the process and who are the most affected by it.
I am working on this project inspired by personal experiences involving in parents’ separation, listening to many similar stories from people around me and also studying cases from books relating to children of divorce. There are many emotional signs and responses that we experience when we first knew the situation of the divorce or separation and going through the emotional struggle for many years following. Many of the times our signs and responses are either neglected by the parents or we are too afraid to voice them out to the parents due to many different reasons. So I hope through working in this project, I could create a platform to help the children of different ages to voice out by writing or drawing out their thoughts and in turn to help them and myself to better adjusted to the changes that divorce or separation brought to the family and benefitting others too.
The deliverables of this project would be an interactive digital book on the multimedia devices, such as the iPad, which shows six different emotions of Chinese typographic idioms done with motion graphics to enhance the feeling or emotions and meaning of the words. And in this six different emotions would be accompanying by the journals or stories of each emotion. And lastly at the end section of the book will be a form where the users or audience can share their stories too. |
