In the seemingly developed Singaporean society, it is surprising that there is still a backward attitude towards homosexuality within Singaporean society.
In Singapore, sex between two mutually consenting adult men is considered illegal and punishable according to Section 377A of the Penal Code of Singapore.
“Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or abets the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of, any act of gross indecency with another male person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years.” ("Penal code (chapter 224)" MAY 02, 2013)
In 2013, a gay Singaporean couple tried to file repeal against the anti-gay law, Section 377A. Unfortunately their repeal was rejected by the high court .
With existence of the section 377A and also the fear for being judged by society for their sexuality, gay men find themselves looking for ways to embrace their sexuality in secrecy through different ways.
This photographic project aims to look closely at the different ways that Singaporean gay men use to make sense of who they are and their connection with the rest of the gay community. |
