Summary: | As the Building Construction Authority (BCA) had withdrawn British Standards in 2010 and has started to implement Eurocodes into the construction industry in Singapore, this project aims to produce a pioneering spreadsheet that designs steel beams in accordance to Eurocode 3 standards. With the increasing importance of steel structures in constructions nowadays, it is undeniable that steel beams are widely used everywhere. Hand calculations become obsolete and uneconomical for the project due to its time consuming nature. Hence, spreadsheet is created to provide huge help for the engineers to design, analyse and perform checks for any quantity of steel beams in a short period of time.
This spreadsheet particularly performs checks and designs of simply supported steel beams bending about their X-X axis. Not only that the spreadsheet is designed based on Eurocode 3 standards, a check is made to verify that the desired steel beam pass the deflection, shear resistance, bending moment and lateral torsional buckling tests. Other than its good functionality, the author would like to make this spreadsheet as user-friendly as possible in order to avoid difficulties during usage. The user will not have to input the parameters of the steel beam used one by one any longer once the size of the beam has been chosen. Therefore, this makes our project’s spreadsheet tremendously suitable for civil engineering students and engineers to use. |
