Description
Summary:This is a dual project and is undertaken by the author and his partner. This project aimed to identify and study the variables determining the supply and demand of taxi services in Singapore. The project was assigned whereby the author took on the demand analysis while the supply analysis was carried out by his partner. Under the demand analysis, the author aimed to investigate the variables influencing the demand for taxi services in Singapore, establishing a relationship between the variables and the demand and subsequently propose the relationship between the demand and supply of taxi services. Numerous variables affecting the demand for taxi services were identified and listed in a passenger survey. Respondents ranked the variables and listed the average waiting time and taxi fare as one of the more important variables to consider when deciding on the mode of transport. Comprehensive studies were then done on the two variables. Several sets of questionnaire pertaining to different variables were included in the passenger survey in hope to probe the detailed perspective of taxi users. In addition, the author conducted multiple field observation surveys along the roadsides and at taxi stands across the island to determine the current average waiting time for a vacant taxi. The author also obtained data from the Land Transport Authority’s website to further analyze this important variable. The author subsequently analyzed taxi fare and several variables to determine its effects in determining the demand for taxi services. Following the extensive study of past reports, execution of surveys and comprehensive analysis on selected variables, current relationships between the variables and the demand for taxi services in Singapore were justified and new relationships were established in this report.
