As the world progresses into the world of home automation, every household device is slowly developed into remote control capable. However, due to the large number of electronics companies coming out with their own electronic devices with their own remote controls, it is becoming a problem in households that there are too many remote controls lying around. With the popularity of smartphones, the notion of using the smartphone as an universal remote has become popular with the masses today. The objective of this project is to create an Android application to remote control multiple household devices with the help of an Arduino microcontroller. Using the user interface provided by the Android application, the user will send commands to the Arduino microcontroller via Bluetooth. The Arduino will then control the household appliances by sending Infrared signals similar to those remote controls made specifically for those appliances. The Arduino also extends the capability of the application by introducing additional functionality in controlling the devices as well as devices that usually cannot be remote controlled. We have successfully developed an Android application that is capable of connecting with the Arduino device to remote control multiple appliances such as door locks, DVD players, stereos, etc. The system is capable of setting alarms for the devices and record and retransmitting Infrared signals of other remote controls. For more than a decade, smartphones have dominated the mobile phone market with greater and better features that provided greater interactivity with the user that extends beyond making calls and receiving messages.
