Summary: | Back in the early days, the need to send power over long distances to rural and surburban area was utmost priority. Unlike the Direct Current (DC), alternating current (AC) is able to transmit over a long distances in a relatively reasonable cable size. In addition, the high output voltage from the main source can be easily transform into a desired voltage level before it is feed to the residential and commercial power system. In addition, back than many of the household devices requires AC power to operate which makes it more logical to integrate the AC power system.
As most of the appliances used today requires direct current (DC) power to operate, an AC to DC inverter had to be implemented in order to draw power from the alternating current (AC) distribution system. The conversation stage between AC power to DC power result in power losses thus implementing a DC distribution system became a viable option in the near future. On top of that, global warming crisis and fossil fuel depletion have brought worldwide attention to the development of clean energy through renewable resources. Renewable resources such as the solar energy and wind energy generates DC power and this became another roadblock in terms of poor power efficiency when integrating it with AC distribution system. Therefore, a feasible solution addressing to the issue mentioned earlier would be to implement DC distribution systems.
Therefore for this report, the dc distribution system will be analyzed and simulated so as to determine its feasibility. The idea of the dc distribution system is to integrate both the traditional AC source and the renewable energy system together onto a DC bus. To account for the high fluctuation nature of renewable energy, energy storage system is also integrated into the DC distribution system. |
