Summary: | Indoor positioning has been researched and developed significantly in the past few years because the applications used for tracking person or object in the indoor environment are increasing in importance and purposes. The outdoor positioning system is accurate and efficient due to the global satellite positioning systems (GPS), but applications should be capable of being able to perform indoor as well so that a larger target market could be hit. No single solution is available for affordable and accurate indoor positioning. Extended market analysis is required to tailor the user needs with the carefully weighed parameters such as accuracy, cost, privacy, coverage, speed etc.
This project discusses different physical principles employed by all the technologies that can be employed by the applications. These are inertial navigation (accelerometers and gyroscopes), mechanical waves (ultra‐sound) and electromagnetic waves (visible, infrared, cellular networks, DECT phones, WLAN, ZigBee, RFID, ultra‐wideband). For each mentioned technology positioning mechanisms, techniques and algorithms are explained, relevant literature is reviewed and limitations/qualities are identified.
In particular, in this project we have discussed and identified WiShop which is an android application, as the solution for tracking movements and estimating the user’s own position in the indoor environments. At the end, recommendations are made regarding the better accuracy for future references. |
