In this report, it analyses failure root causes of crane rail, through various characterization techniques, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry and Optical Microscopy. It was determined that presence of martensite in heat affected zone link to hydrogen-induce cold crack was the agitation factor for fracture. To overcome this problem and increase service cycle for crane rail, recommendation for pre-weld and post-weld heat treatment to achieve uniform microstructure.
