Description
Summary:The vibration limits of steel structures are frequently documented in DNV and Llyod Classification. However, there are no standards on the limits of vibration for GRP pipe. With the increasing use of Glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) in piping, this study aims to determine the vibration limit of the GRP pipe with reference to the existing steel pipe standards. As such, a vibration model of a pipe that assumes Euler-Bernoulli behavior under one dimensional transverse vibration is used for the study. The pipe model is subjected to axial, point and uniform loading conditions. Structural analysis and modal analysis are carried out using the finite element approach. From the structural and modal analysis, the amount of deformation and the respective natural frequencies corresponding to the mode shapes are obtained. The corresponding values of vibration amplitude and vibration velocity are then calculated in order to compare the results of the finite element analysis with the current values presented by JP Graham and EFX vibration standards. The accuracy of the finite element model for the steel pipe is then verified against current standards and a correction factor is then applied for the values that are obtained from the model. The finite element model is then applied to the GRP pipe and the results obtained are then extrapolated to predict their behavior at various frequencies. The extrapolated results of the vibration limit for the GRP pipe are discussed and plotted on the vibration graph using the current JP Graham and EFX vibration standards.
