School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Wang Zhiwei DRNTU::Engineering The objective of the study is to give comprehensive analysis of bus priority schemes implemented in Singapore. Literature review was conducted to provide background knowledge of various bus priority schemes. Evaluation for effectiveness of Bus Lane Scheme in Singapore was the focus of study. Three road scenarios with different schemes were chosen for evaluation. Site experiments were conducted to collect traffic data of roads and vehicles. Two different approaches were adopted in evaluation. With theoretical formulas, analytical method was used to compute and compare the total passenger transported, road capacity and total travel time. It is proven that bus lanes reduce bus travel time and improve travel speed. Negative impacts of longer travel time and heavier traffic condition on non-bus vehicles are shown. Alternatives were proposed and software simulation approach was adopted using VISSIM. Both real road scenarios and alternatives were simulated and the results further support the evaluations from analytical method. Bus priority network maps were constructed and analyzed. Singapore has a hierarchy system of bus priority schemes. The existing schemes include Full-Day Bus Lane, Normal Bus Lane, Mandatory Give-Way To Buses Scheme. The integrated bus priority network is systematic and effective. Bus priority scheme has been proven effective in solving urban traffic problems, which is vital for future development of Singapore as a land scare country. The evaluation of the schemes should consider performance from both buses and private vehicles. Rights of all road users should be taken care of. The benefit gained by buses, as well as negative impacts on private vehicles, should be considered in implementation of bus priority scheme.
