Predictors of weight loss in overweight Singaporean males in the Singapore Adult Metabolism Study (SAMS).

We aim to investigate if Restraint, Disinhibition and Hunger scores from the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) or other measures are predictors to weight loss in 51 overweight Singaporean males who have completed a 16-week weight loss intervention. The intervention comprised of diet...

School of Biological Sciences Mary Chong Chen Shiqi DRNTU::Science::Biological sciences We aim to investigate if Restraint, Disinhibition and Hunger scores from the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) or other measures are predictors to weight loss in 51 overweight Singaporean males who have completed a 16-week weight loss intervention. The intervention comprised of diet modification through meal replacements, group and individual nutritional education and counselling sessions, as well as prescribed and supervised exercise regime. After intervention, there was a significant reduction in mean body weight (-7.95 ± 3.45 kg), Skinfold fat composition (-3.24 ± 3.357 %) and DEXA fat composition (-2.93 ± 2.93 %). There were also improvements in eating behaviours. Overall, the Restraint score increased while Disinhibition score and Hunger score decreased. General Linear Model was used to study the relationship between these eating behaviours and weight loss. It revealed significant predictors of weight loss to be the number of gym sessions attended per week (p<0.001 ,B= 2.977), post-intervention Disinhibition score (p=0.41,B=-0.629) and change in Disinhibition score (p=0.41,B= -0.629. Baseline Disinhibition was also marginally associated with weight loss (p=0.06, B=-0.422). These findings suggest that by looking at the Disinhibition scores and gym session attendance, we can predict weight loss for overweight male participants in Singapore.
