Numerical simulations of coastal water qualities

Eutrophication refers to how the ecosystems of various water bodies react and respond to the addition of excessive nutrients, such as nitrates and phosphates. The coastal water of reclaimed Jurong Island may be a potential avenue for eutrophication to take place. This is largely due to the new reclaimed landscape and the presence of many chemical industries that discharge industrial wastes into the coastal water. In this work, different approaches, indices and parameters have been used to assess the trophic state of the coastal waters by analyzing eutrophication related variables such as concentration of phosphates, nitrates, phytoplankton, chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen and the transparency of the water. Each of these approaches is reviewed to assess the suitability in assessing the trophic state in Jurong Island. Feasible control measures for eutrophication problem have also been discussed in this work. The author hopes that this work can give a brief outline of the trophic state of the Jurong Island coastal waters. At the same time, the author hopes that the indices and parameters used can allow simple and brief assessment of the trophic state of water bodies, especially when no computer software is available.
