This paper introduces the scenario planning framework and case study method to provide a reference to shipping investment strategies. This report pays special focus on the area of dry bulk shipping market and the scenario in year 2020. With extensive literature review, analysis, surveys and interviews with shipping professionals, qualitative and quantitative results converge to provide a well balanced view of the proposed scenario planning framework on making shipping investment decisions. Conclusions drawn from the results indicate that key drivers of future scenarios will have substantial effect and implications on decision making. Based on analysis of ship investment strategies suggested by case studies, recommendations are put forth for future work on a fuller scenario planning framework for ship owners.
