Summary: | This is the final report of our Final Year Project, Jurong Island Groundwater Study: Yield Enhancement
through Surface Water Recharge.
Jurong Island was formed from seven offshore islands through land reclamation with a total land area of
32km2. It is a region where excessive groundwater abstraction could occur when the rate at which it is
being abstracted is faster than the rate at which it is being recharged naturally. When this happens, there is
a possibility of saltwater intrusion and even contaminating the groundwater supply. Thus, to use
groundwater as a source of water supply as well as to prevent saltwater intrusion, we could look into
recharging the groundwater by using bioretention systems. Being made up of mostly reclaimed land
where the underlying soil is sand, it is suitable for building recharge basins as the permeability of sand is
relatively high. Hence this report looks into practical schemes at which the yield of groundwater recharge
may be increased through optimizing the design of the basin.
The design of the recharge basin will also be in line with PUB’s Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters
Programme (ABC Programme) where Singapore seeks to integrate drains, canals and reservoirs with the
surrounding environment to create beautiful community spaces for all to enjoy. |
