Summary:The present study describes a laboratory trial to access the feasibility of using an alternative fill material created from excavated soft soil and granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) in land reclamation. A comprehensive list of geotechnical tests was conducted to determine the geotechnical parameters of untreated soil, 25%GBFS-75%Soil mixture and 24%GBFS-75%Soil-1%Lime mixture. With the addition of GBFS and lime, there were substantial improvements in unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and undrained shear strength as well as significant reductions in swelling behaviour of the soft soil. The potential environmental impacts of the mixtures were evaluated using Toxicity Characteristics Leaching Procedures (TCLP) which simulates the leaching process in a landfill. The heavy metal concentrations in all the leachates were significantly lower than US EPA’s toxicity limit. In general, preliminary assessment suggests that lime-treated GBFS-Soil blend is suitable to be used as fill material in reclamation projects.
